Sunwoo Hwang is a Korean composer whose music articulates personal understandings and aesthetic perceptions formed through continuous interaction with the surrounding world. Drawing on visual imagery, tactile sensation, and the cognitive processes through which humans perceive external reality, his works translate these experiences into a highly individual musical language. He places particular emphasis on the intrinsic pleasure of listening—an experience unique to music—realized through the careful construction and development of diverse sonic materials.
Born in Busan, South Korea in 1992, Hwang is currently based in Seoul. He graduated as valedictorian of the entire College of Music from Kyung Hee University, where he studied composition with Seung-Rim Kim, and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Composition at the Korea National University of Arts, studying with Byung-Moo Lee and Ji-Hyang Kim. His accolades include First Prize at the 42nd Korea Music Association Composition Competition and an award at the 5th Ise-Shima International Composition Competition. He has also participated in masterclasses led by internationally renowned composers Chaya Czernowin, Georg Friedrich Haas, and Mauro Lanza, further shaping his compositional perspective and technical approach.
His works have been presented at numerous national and international festivals, including the Daegu Contemporary Music Festival (DCMF), ISCM Korea 53rd PAN Music Festival, and the 2025 CEME Festival. In 2026, he is scheduled to present new works after being selected for several international composition programs and workshops, including the HSLU Academy for Contemporary Music, the Barcelona Modern International Composition Course (12th edition), and IDEA (International Divertimento Ensemble Academy) – IWYC(International Workshop for Young Composers).
His music has been performed, or is scheduled to be performed, by ensembles such as PMF Ensemble (Korea), Cabinet of Curiosities (Japan), Dissolution Ensemble (Switzerland), Ensemble Linea (France), and Divertimento Ensemble (Italy), and has been interpreted by soloists including Jonathan Shapiro (USA), Geon Soo Hwang (Korea), and Patrick Sangbin Rhie (Korea)
